Introduction
Hokkaido (7 types of seafood) was second in the prefectures with the highest catches and types of seafood that will be in season in October. Hokkaido was in the top 3 for 4 consecutive months.
In Hokkaido, the following seven types of fish and shellfish will be in season in October.

Japan Fisheries Cooperatives has selected “Spirinchus ( Shishamo smelt) on the Pacific coast of Hokkaido“ (season: October-November) and “Otaru / Ishikari mantis shrimp” (season: October-December) as “PRIDE FISH” in autumn in Hokkaido. I have previously introduced “Pacific Coastal Matsukawa-garei (flatfish)” (season: September-January), which has been selected as the “PRIDE FISH” in autumn.
Capelin is commonly eaten as “shishamo” throughout Japan. “Shishamo”, which is endemic species to Japan, is a valuable species that accounts for less than 10% of the total distribution volume in Japan. Moreover, the fishing season is limited to the two months of October and November. “Kushiro Shishamo” and “Mukawa Shishamo” have acquired regional collective trademark registration.
Legend has it that when the Ainu people were suffering from hunger, “Shishamo” consulted with the gods and gave life to the willow leaves as “Shishamo” and let them flow into Mukawa river. From there, it is expressed in Chinese characters as “Willow leaves fish”.
I used to eat “shishamo sushi” in Mukawa in October. I remember it was very delicious. When you go to Hokkaido in October or November, please try “Shishamo”. In addition, you will arrive at Mukawa Town from Tomakomai in about 30 minutes by JR regular train.
