Shizuoka prefecture has the highest catch of tuna in Japan. Shimizu Port is particularly famous, and the landing of frozen tuna accounts for about 50% of the landing amount in Japan, making it the largest in Japan. By the way, Miyazaki Prefecture is the second largest tuna catch, and Kagoshima Prefecture is the third. The Japanese are famous for their love of tuna and consume about one-fifth of the world’s tuna.

PRIDE FISH

The autumn “PRIDE FISH” in Shizuoka prefecture selected by Japan Fisheries Cooperatives is “Suruga Bay Hon-ebi (Haliporoides sibogae)” (season: September-May) and “Nishina Yariika (spear squid) ” (season: October-March). Also, when introducing the summer “PRIDE FISH”, “Nishina no Maika (Japanese flying squid)” (season: June-October) is selected. When you go to Shizuoka in October, you can eat both spear squid and Japanese flying squid, so it’s great for squid lovers.

spear squid

The official name of “Hon-ebi” is “Haliporoides siboga”. It lives in the deep sea, tends to lose its freshness, and is consumed only near the fishing port where it is landed. This shrimp landed at Toda Port in Numazu City is a first-class product. We would like to go to Toda Port to eat “Hon-ebi” once.
