5.Paradox of Choice

Every day, we provide travel information on BLOG and SNS, and we will explain why and how to create a travel route.

Our mission is to “create a world where everyone can travel easily.” We believe that we can make “a world where everyone can travel easily” by solving the physically problem of reducing the burden of large and heavy luggage and the mentally problem of enhancing travel information. Providing travel information will lead to improved travel convenience, as explained below. As a result, we believe that it will be the “easiest travel for everyone” both physically and mentally.

I love traveling so much that I have traveled to more than 40 countries abroad and all 47 prefectures in Japan. In many of these trips so far, we have come to realize how difficult it is to obtain travel information in my own country before traveling abroad, and how much effort it takes to obtain the information. We have also experienced many unfortunate things that we could not go to the tourist spot I wanted to go because we did not know the travel information such as local transportation. We believe that the various difficulties of travel are often due to the lack of travel information before travel.

1.Pre-planning for travel is one of the greatest stresses in life

Here are some surveys of travelers. The first is a Hotels.com ™ survey of people in 26 countries around the world. Approximately one in three (32%) of the world’s millennial travelers cite pre-planning for travel as one of the greatest stresses in life. This survey was for the millennium generation, but even the millennium generation with high search ability has a hard time preparing for travel, so it seems that the higher generations are more stressed. But one of the greatest stresses of life is surprising. We can understand how difficult it is to prepare for a trip.

2.Troublesome to plan in advance to collect information to travel abroad

Next, although it is a bid old survey, it is a survey report of “Survey on overseas travel” for Japanese people conducted by the Japan Association of Travel Agents for 4,740 people in 2008. In this survey, 26.9% of the respondents answered that it is troublesome to plan in advance and collect information as a factor that they do not want to travel abroad.

3.Troublesome to prepare luggage for an overseas trip

Finally, this is also a slightly old survey, but it is a 2008 JTB survey (4,515 subjects). According to this survey, 22% of “preparing luggage” ranked first in “Troublesome things when preparing for an overseas trip”. In addition, the 2nd place is “take a vacation” 16%, the 3rd place is “reservation and arrangement of accommodation and transportation” 11%, and the 4th place is “it is troublesome to make a plan such as a destination” 7%. We can’t do anything about taking second place vacation. However, We think that the pain of the 1st place can be solved by the rental service at the travel destination, and the pain of the 3rd and 4th place can be solved by providing travel information as much as possible.

4.Travel planning requires too many options and decisions

So why do we feel so much stress and suffering in planning a trip? We suspect that the loss aversion” under prospect theory has an effect. Travel planning requires many options and decisions on all of them. For example, when planning a trip, there are many options such as when going on a travel, number of days to travel, travel partner, destination, tourist attraction to visit, transportation, accommodation, meal, restaurant, travel clothes, etc.

I think the psychology of “tychiphobia” works on the decisions and decisions that each of these many options must make. I think that the psychology of “tychiphobia” and “loss aversion” is stress and pain. There are too many options for planning a trip.

Prospect theory is one of the decision-making models under uncertainty. And we think that many options for making travel plans are the “uncertainty” of travelers’ planning.

Also, we think it can be explained by “Jam study”. “Jam study” is a psychological phenomenon in which you cannot choose if you have too many choices. The study derived from the experiment that jams lined up on the shelves of supermarkets became easier for many customers to choose and the purchase rate increased when the number of types was reduced. As mentioned above, planning a trip has too many options. That’s why we can’t choose as many jams line up on the shelves. Even if we try to choose, it will be painful due to the “tychiphobia”.

5.Paradox of Choice

Furthermore, it can be explained by the psychologist Barry Schwartz’s “Paradox of Choice”. He argues that more choices make people unhappy. “Too many choices make people feel helpless,” he says, and “people are less satisfied with the results they choose than when they have fewer choices.”

In this way, many theories support that the large number of travel options creates a lot of stress.

So what can we do to eliminate these “uncertainty” and “many choices”? Next time, we will explain how to eliminate “uncertainty” and narrow down the options that we thought of.
