8. Number of foreign visitors to Japan
A chart of the number of foreign visitors to Japan up to March 2022 is also attached. After the inauguration of the Kishida Cabinet on October 4, 2021, Japan’s border measures were strengthened. Therefore, the number of foreigners entering the country decreased year over year by 19% (22,113) in Oct 2021, 64% (20,682) in Nov 2021, 79% (12,084) in Dec 2021, 62% (17,766) in Jan 2022. However, due to the relaxation of border controls for business travelers and international students, the number increased by 127% (16,700) in Feb 2022 and 438% (66,100) in Mar.
It would be great for the Japanese tourism industry if the “more relaxed border controls like other G7s in June” mentioned at the lecture in London yesterday (May 5, 2022) is realized. By all means, I sincerely hope that further relaxation of border controls will be realized in order to increase the number of foreign tourists.
