Aomori Prefecture is surrounded by the Sea of Japan, the Tsugaru Straits, and the Pacific Ocean, and many types of fish and shellfish are landed. In the center of Aomori Prefecture, there is Mutsu Bay, which is a huge inner bay, and the scallop aquaculture industry is thriving. Due to the existence of Mutsu Bay, Aomori Prefecture has the highest production of aquaculture scallops in Japan. Hokkaido is the largest producer of natural scallops in Japan.
5.”PRIDE FISH”
Japan Fisheries Cooperatives has selected “Yamato Shijimi (corb shell) from Lake Jusanko” (season: July-December) and “Aomori Flounder” (season: September-December) for “PRIDE FISH” in autumn in Aomori Prefecture. The season of “Aomori Sakhalin surf clam”, which was selected as “PRIDE FISH” in winter, is from January to March, so even if we visit Aomori in December, it will be difficult to eat.
Lake Jusanko is located in Goshogawara City and is called Lake Jusanko because 13 rivers flow into it. Like Lake Shinji in Shimane Prefecture, Lake Jusanko is a brackish lake that is a mixture of seawater and freshwater, so corb shell grow there. Aomori Prefecture has the second highest production of corb shell (Shimane Prefecture is the first).
Aomori Prefecture has the second highest production of natural flounder (2019) in Japan (1st is Hokkaido). However, the ranking change from year to year. The quality of flatfish in Aomori Prefecture is highly evaluated nationwide.
