List of JR Central & West’s limited express trains

Following on from “List of local railways with less than 1,000 daily passengers,” we will be compiling a list of all express trains in Japan, from JR Hokkaido to JR Kyushu, in sequence.

The greatest pleasure of train travel is enjoying the scenery from the train window. In particular, express trains have long intervals between stations so that you can enjoy beautiful landscapes continuously for a long time. Travelers can enjoy the beautiful scenery because most limited express trains have seats for two people or box seats, unlike the long seats common on regular trains.

Eating and drinking are also easier on express trains, as they are two-seaters or box seats. It is a pleasure to eat “Ekiben (train lunch)” and drink sake (locally brewed sake), Japanese wine, or craft beer with a view of the countryside on train travel. You can never experience this pleasure when driving a rental car.

Limited express train stations are often relatively large towns, even in the countryside. It is fun for travelers to get off the train on the way and stroll the local shopping streets.

Furthermore, rail travel is a practice of sustainable tourism. According to 2019 data from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, the CO2 emissions per kilometer traveled by one person are 98 g (75% of car emissions) for airplanes, 57 g (44%) for buses, and 17 g (13%) for trains, compared to 130 g for cars.

We feature limited express trains from JR Tokai and JR West this time. JR Tokai operates mainly on the Tokaido Shinkansen, and therefore operates fewer limited express trains than the other JR companies. Therefore, we decided to feature JR Tokai and JR West together.

JR Tokai is characterized by its long transport kilometers per passenger (111.7 km in 2019), as its main business is the Tokaido Shinkansen. The average of the six JR companies is 28.6 km, less than a third of JR Central.

JR West is second to JR East in terms of total operating kilometers and long-distance routes. Many express trains run along the Sea of Japan side of the San’in and Hokuriku regions and the Seto Inland Sea. So travelers can enjoy the sea scenery as well as the mountains.

JR 東海、JR西日本的特快列車列表

繼上一次的「List of local railways with less than 1,000 daily passengers毎日客運量低於1000人次的地方鐵路列表」、我們製作了特快列車的列表。從JR北海道到JR九州,我們會依次介紹日本各地所有的特快列車。

鐵路旅行的最大樂趣就是欣賞車窗外的風景。 尤其是特快列車的停站間隔較長,可以有較長時間欣賞沿路風景。 另外,與一般列車的長形座位背向窗戶不同,特急列車的雙人座位或是包廂的座位旁均設有窗戶,讓您可以欣賞美麗的景色。

一邊品嚐充滿當地特色的鐵路便當,品味日本酒(在地酒)、日本葡萄酒、及精釀啤酒。搭乘日本鐵道旅行,能夠讓你擁有自駕旅行時無法體驗到的樂趣,而且在郊外搭乘鐵道旅行時,絕對不會遇上像鬧區尖峰時段般的蜂湧人潮。

而且就算在郊外地區,特快列車停靠的幾乎都是較大型的城市或車站,因此中途下車後到訪車站前的商店街裡散步也是很不錯的旅行選擇。

使用鐵路作為旅行的交通工具,也能夠實踐永續環保的理念。根據日本國土交通省的資料顯示,自行開車時,每行駛1公里的每人二氧化量排放量為130克,而搭乘飛機時為98克(自行開車的75%),搭乘巴士為57克(自行開車的44%)、搭乘鐵路則為17克(自行開車的13%)。

這次我們會介紹JR東海以及西日本的特快列車。 因JR 東海的特快列車主要為東海道新幹線,所以新幹線以外的特快列車比其他JR營運地區較少。因此這一次會連同JR西日本的特快列車一併進行介紹。

JR 東海主要營運路線為東海道新幹線, 乘客平均運輸距離(2019 年)為 111.7 km,而其他6個JR 營運公司的平均運輸距離為28.6 km,只有JR東海約三分之一的距離。因此JR東海有很長的平均運輸距離的特點。

另外JR西日本的總運營距離僅次於JR東日本,並擁有多條長途路線。 山陰・北陸地區的日本海以及瀨戶內海沿線有設有各種特快列車,可以同時欣賞山景和大海的景色。
